LaCie and Porsche Design have together announced the launch of a new USB-C external hard drive which ships with a USB-C port, and is particularly targeted towards the new extremely thin and light MacBook from Apple. Apart from offering high speed content transfers and modern looks, this product delivers in the durability department as well.
The new USB–C standard allows users to connect the cables from either of the two sides, since both of them are identical. This isn’t the case with current-gen USB standards which only connect via one side, much to the frustration of those who are in a hurry.
The new LaCie offering is called the Porsche Design Mobile Drive, and this metal-clad storage solution is all set to be made available in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB options. Apart from a cable supporting USB-C connectivity, it will also come bundled with a cord that will grant compatibility with Type-A USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 standards.
This fresh new storage device is capable of offering a speed of up to a whopping 100MB/s using its USB 3.0 interface. LaCie has revealed that its enclosure has been crafted from 3mm–thick solid aluminum, which grants it the protection needed to bear the usual blows of everyday life.
While it’s also compatible with Windows systems, this drive has been specially designed keeping in mind Mac users. It’s hence that it supports the Time Machine feature on OS X for easy backing up of important user data.
The LaCie Porsche Design Mobile Drive is slated to be made available in the next quarter, and that’s when we’re expecting its official pricing details to arrive.
