Apple’s iPhones usually shatter all speed records when they arrive and the iPhone XS series is no different. The handsets have the new 7nm A12 Bionic processor ticking away inside, promising a 15% increase in speed and a 50% faster GPU.

Evidence of this power shows up in a number of tests Tom’s Guide conducted to see how the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max stack up against the iPhone X, in addition to Snapdragon 845-running Android flagships like the OnePlus 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and Galaxy S9+. The publication started out with a multi-core Geekbench 4 evaluation.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max Test Results

As expected, the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XS fly past its nearest competition at 11515 and 11420 points, respectively. The iPhone X manages 10357 points, still far ahead of the OnePlus 6 (9088), Galaxy Note 9 (8876), LG G7 ThinQ (8566), and Galaxy S9+ (8295).

Crunching some numbers, the iPhone XS pair are about 11% faster than the iPhone X. That’s not a huge surprise, since both contain 4GB of RAM to the latter’s 3GB of RAM. As for real-world tests, the publication used the Adobe Clips app to transcode a 2-minute 4K clip to 1080p.

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max took just 39 seconds to complete the task. The iPhone X followed at a respectable 43 seconds. The Galaxy S9+ took much longer in comparison at over 2 minutes and 32 seconds. Even the OnePlus 6 couldn’t keep up, taking 3 minutes and 45 seconds.

It wasn’t a complete win for the Apple smartphones though. The duo got beaten by the OnePlus 6 in the 3DMark Slingshot Extreme (Graphics) test. The Android device scored 5124 to the iPhone XS Max’s 4339 and the iPhone XS’ 4244. Even the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9+ performed better at 4639 and 4634, respectively.
