Just as anticipated, iOS 6, the next generation mobile OS for iDevices, was recently unveiled at the Apple WWDC 2012. This updated platform brings in over 200 new features including Facebook integration, a Maps application, updates to Siri and much more.

Apart from Facebook integration which allows users to make posts via Notification Center, Siri and apps supporting the SNS, the latest OS packs in a fresh Maps application that proffers vector-based elements for a smooth and fluid experience. It features turn-by-turn navigation with spoken directions, real-time traffic information, a 3D view and local search that delivers details from a wide catalog of businesses.

“iOS 6 continues the rapid pace of innovation that is helping Apple reinvent the phone and create the iPad category, delivering the best mobile experience available on any device,” expressed Scott Forstall, Apple’s senior vice president of iOS Software. “We can’t wait for hundreds of millions of iOS users to experience the incredible new features in iOS 6 including the new Maps app, expanded Siri support, deep Facebook integration, Shared Photo Streams and the innovative new Passbook app.”

The virtual assistant Siri which remained dedicated to the iPhone 4S, will now be available for the new iPad as well. Additionally, the update enhances this attribute with better capabilities and language support by adding Spanish, Italian, Korean, Mandarin and Cantonese to its list. Other features include a Passbook app and sharing options as well as enhanced web browsing through Safari and the ability to commence FaceTime calls over cellular networks.

iOS 6 beta is currently up for grabs for all developer program members. The final version is expected to be available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch as a free software update this fall, probably when Cupertino unleashes its next smartphone.
