iOS 12 beta 2 confirms new Apple Watch Series 4 models

Apple watchOS 5

The iOS 12 beta 2 has just come out and it’s got plenty of interesting new features for folks to parse through. One such person is 9to5Mac’s Guilherme Rambo who discovered references to the Apple Watch Series 4 within the software’s depths.

Apple Watch models are typically found in iOS builds because the wearable is still heavily dependent on iPhones. The handset has to be aware of new models of the smartwatch in order to talk to them. The publication found 4 identifiers connected to the upcoming series namely Watch4,1, Watch4,2, Watch4,3 and Watch4,4.

The Apple Watch Series 3 has the same identifiers (Watch3,1 to Watch3,4), so it’s plausible that these new identifiers are linked to the Apple Watch Series 4. There are also model numbers tied to the new lineup such as MTUD2, MTUK2 and MTX92.

Apple Watch Series 4 Speculation

Sadly, the leak doesn’t actually reveal anything about the new Apple Watches. Turning to speculation, the wearable will probably cut down on bezels so that the display can be 15% bigger than before. It’ll probably make room for a bigger battery as well.

Also on the cards are solid state buttons. The Apple Watch has stuck to physical buttons so far, but the new variant might switch things up by replacing it with a fixed key which vibrates when pressed. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 have a similar setup in their home button.

One big advantage of this is that the Apple Watch will get better at resisting water thanks to fewer moving parts. Plus, the risk of mechanical parts getting spoilt reduces. There’s even talk of embedding sensors for picking up advanced medical data like heart rhythms which can’t be picked up by the existing heart rate sensor.

The Apple Watch Series 4 will probably come out in September alongside Apple’s latest trio of iPhones. iOS 12 and watchOS 5 are likely to roll out soon after.
