DotAsia, a not-for-profit organization formed by national top-level domain registries around Asia such as .IN, .CN, .JP, .NZ and .SG, has announced that it has received signups from India for its ‘Celebrity Pioneer Program.’ This news came to be known at the ICANN’s 31st International Public Meeting that took place in New Delhi.
Basically, the ‘Celebrity Pioneer Program’ offers Indian stars and celebrities the chance, or should we say, priority to register their domain names with .Asia before the registrations are actually opened to the general public, which is scheduled to open on February 20, 2008.
There is a lot in a domain name. Some domain names, such as Poker.com have been sold for a whopping amount close to $27 million.
“There are more than 450 million online customers in Asia, and the .ASIA domain name is a gateway to reach this largest Internet market in the world. While .COM ignited the ecommerce boom in the US, .EU was created for Europe. .Asia is the first global top-level-domain that is headquartered in Asia and will be the platform for growth of the region. The Pioneer Domains Program focuses on building positive usage of the .Asia domain which in turn drives adoption and development for the Internet community across Asia,” said Edmund Chung, CEO, DotAsia Organization Limited.
However, not all Indian stars have been lucky. Former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen was forced to legally sue a Canada-based man for squatting on her domain name sushmitasen.com.
Still others like Hritik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor and even Amitabh Bachchan do not even own their domain names. In fact, most Bollywood celebrities are totally oblivious to the fact that their cyber identity has been hijacked or than sites in their names can be potentially misused for abusive purposes.
Cricket veteran Kapil Dev said, “Yes, I lost out on securing KapilDev.com and KapilDev.in for myself. However, KapilDev.asia will be my home on the Internet. It is indeed a pleasure to join hands with DotAsia for it is doing commendable work through its Celebrity Pioneers Program. It’s time for all stars – especially athletes and cricket stars – to take their online presence seriously. With .Asia website in their name, they have a perfect platform to connect with their fans and audience.”
As of now, some of the celebrities who have already registered Dot Asia domain names with the Celebrity Pioneer Program include legendary cricketer Kapil Dev, TV star Rakshanda Khan, pop diva Shibani Kashyap, pop artist and VJ from Channel V Anoushka, and Indian idol winner Rahul Vaidya.
