On Monday ICANN gave a nod for the development of the .tel top domain, which according to supporters will offer a platform for surfing and naming of internet communications. Put forward by Telnic in 2000, the group said that the internet users would profit from navigating directly to way to commune with institutions that operate websites.
In a statement Telnic CEO Khashayar Mahdavi said, “The days of needing to remember several telephone numbers, numerous VoIP or instant message identities and other points of contact for our social and professional networks are over.” Mahdavi added, “By leveraging innovative DNS technology, the .Tel domain will allow anyone to publish and control, in real time, how they can be reached.”
The release of free applications taking advantage of such services is the next probable move of the company.
