Hutch gets renamed as Vodafone in India

Hutch and Vodafone logos From Orange to Hutch and now Vodafone! This network operator has surely made loads of transitions in terms of not only in its logo colors and names but also in its services.

20th September 2007 is the day when Hutch shall be rechristened as “Vodafone” in India. Let’s bid adieu to the ‘pink’ of Hutch and welcome the corporate red colored logo of Vodafone Essar.

Vodafone had acquired 67 per cent in Hutchison Essar from Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa a few months ago, in a move to enter the rapidly emerging Indian market.

Global player Vodafone completed the acquisition of Hutchison Essar in May 2007 and the company was formally rechristened Vodafone Essar in July 2007.

And if you think all this involves stacks of moolah (well we thought the same too) then think again. According to Harit Nagpal, the director for marketing and new businesses at Vodafone Essar, the re-branding is taking place at an “extremely” low cost. Without revealing the exact amount, Nagpal stated that the amount was much less than Rs 500 crore that is being talked about.

TV ads will kick off from Thursday night, while the print advertisements will appear on Friday, September 21. The logos too will be changed on Friday at prominent locations and shops.

Speaking about the logo change, Nagpal stated that the theme of this switch will be that of Hutch becoming Vodafone and there will be no other message at this point. “The first phase will be the key cities where the change will take three to four weeks and the next phase will be the next tier of cities that will take another three to four weeks,” Nagpal said.

According to Nagpal, the changeover message will be communicated to 35 million customers and four lakh shops where the logos will be changed.

Asim Ghosh, managing director, Vodafone Essar said in a press release, “We’ve had a great innings as Hutch in India and today marks a new beginning for us. Not as a departure from the fundamentals that created Hutch, but an acceleration into the future with Vodafone’s global expertise.
