The HTC Butterfly may not be coming to the Europe after all. Everyone probably assumed that it would after Expansys put the device up for pre-order on its UK web site. And we have to admit, even we got carried away. It quietly came out on the OEM’s global site just prior and that’s probably what got everyone excited at the possibility of the phone reaching new shores.
But as it turns out, it was too soon to talk about the European adaptation of the global version of Japan’s J Butterfly and the Droid DNA designed specifically for the US. The phone that got everyone perked up – before we heard about the massive, the colossal, the Oppo Find 5 – was not meant to be.
Expansys has taken down its UK pre-order page and Unwired View reports that according to web site Cool Smartphone, those who had pre-booked the device have received an e-mail telling them that their pre-order has had to be cancelled. Apparently HTC has informed the retailer that the device will not be available for European markets.
Anyway, here’s what European customers are missing. The phone sports a really large display, with a 5-inch Super LCD 3 touch screen throwing out visuals in 1080p or full HD resolution. It runs on the latest Android platform, version 4.2, and has a Corning Gorilla Glass 2 coating protecting the screen.
An 8MP camera is fitted on the rear with auto focus, LED flash and BSI sensor for better low light sensitivity, capable of 1080p video recording. Like most high-end HTC phones, it features a dedicated imaging chip that takes care of all camera needs. There is also a 2.1MP front-facing webcam and the company says it can be used for video chatting at 1080p.
Other key specs include the 1.5GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 16GB ROM which users can expand to 32GB via a micrSD card slot. In terms of connectivity there is Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS with GLONASS as well as DLNA support.
So it looks like those in Europe hoping to get their hands on the HTC Butterfly will have to settle for something else, or wait until CES and MWC next year to find out about the Taiwanese manufacturer’s plans for the continent.
