When it comes to privacy, most of us concentrate on keeping our data safe from threats like hackers and viruses first and foremost. However, there’s little you can do when it comes to a stranger spying on your laptop’s display. This is where HP’s new Sure View screen could come in useful, shielding your notebook from their prying eyes.
HP’s planning to integrate its Sure View screen into two of its business-slanting laptops, the EliteBook 840 and 1040. It marks the first time a privacy filter has been built into a notebook’s display. Most are available as an external accessory by third-party firms. One of those companies, 3M, has in fact collaborated with HP to bring this technology to life.
Activating Sure View is pretty straightforward. All you’ll have to do is press F2 and your panel will instantly switch from the regular wide viewing mode to private mode. The feature cuts offs visibility from the side by darkening the screen, effectively making sure only people sitting right in front of it can see anything.
Having an in-built privacy mode should prove to be especially useful in public areas like coffee shops and airports where anyone can watch you as you’re typing sensitive information like a password or viewing an email. Dubbed ‘visual hacking’ by HP, the risk could be especially damaging for business users who require absolute security at all times.

Other than the EliteBook 840 and 1040, HP is also planning to add its Sure View screen to other models in its lineup. The two are set to come out in September this year.
