There were high hopes that the Nokia 9 would be coming out by the end of 2018, but it looks like those dreams won’t be coming true. An HMD Global official has confirmed that the smartphone will be a 2019 release and not a 2018 one.

This is sure to disappoint folks who were eagerly looking forward to a true flagship from the house of Nokia. During the launch of the Nokia 8.1, HMD Global’s head of marketing, Britta Gerbracht, told WinFuture and other publications that the Nokia 9 is facing production issues related to its camera.

Why The Nokia 9 Got Delayed

It seems the quality of the camera has not reached the necessary level which HMD Global wants to achieve. There have been a couple of reports claiming that Foxconn was facing challenges manufacturing the Nokia 9’s complicated penta-lens setup. It looks like those stories were fairly accurate after all.

Interestingly, Gerbracht admitted that the Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco didn’t do as well as the brand had hoped they would. The firm wants to get back into the high-end sector in 2019. Major innovations may only come about by 2020 or 2021 in the hopes of becoming the groundbreaking powerhouse the company used to be.

This is good news for loyalists who have been waiting for the company to come out with something truly unique. One can’t blame Nokia for being overcautious; the company disastrously had to be shut down and sold off to Microsoft years before HMD Global came along.

On the subject of HMD Global’s current naming scheme, Gerbracht says it’s here to stay. The Nokia 6 lineup will thus continue to be called Nokia 6, Nokia 6.1, Nokia 6.2, and Nokia 6.3 in the years to come. More phones in the upper mid-range segment are also expected in 2019.
