While we’ve seen manufacturers belting out interesting storage solutions for mainstream consumers and enterprises, AV/DVR and surveillance applications too it seems are not left behind. Western Digital recently revealed its new AV-25 hard drive fashioned to cater to these very markets in India. With lower power consumption, this new drive claims to offer a cooler and quieter operation suiting 24×7 multimedia streaming.

The small form factor 2.5” SATA hard drive delivers high reliability in addition to a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of 1 million hours. It is designed to typically meet the demands of performance-hungry and always-on multimedia streaming environments. The drive should offer all this and more while still operating at cool and quiet temperatures.

The highly reliable drive also proffers universal compatibility as also the ability to record multiple audio and/or high-definition video streams simultaneously. Ideal for applications like DVRs, digital video surveillance and various other SFF environments, the drive should benefit in particular markets that keep power consumption and 24×7 reliability high up on their list.

“Customers that market audio and video recording applications, such as DVRs, media centers and mainstream surveillance systems, often require 24×7 operation from hard drives,” remarked Sushil Bandi, Country Manager – India, Western Digital. “WD AV-25 hard drives are designed to withstand these demanding environments and offer consumers a small form factor solution that consumes less power, generates less heat, and operates quietly and, most importantly, reliably.”

Bundled with advanced format technology, the drive presents enhanced video quality and AV performance via its error correction capability. The drive’s SilkStream technology renders it optimal for smooth and continuous digital video playback of up to five simultaneous HD streams. Drawing less than 2 Watts of power while operating, the drive consumes just about 4.75 Watts in the course of spin up. It’s also incorporated with the Preemptive Wear Leveling (PWL) feature that allows the drive arm to sweep across the disk often, lowering uneven wear on the drive surface.

The WD AV-25 hard drive can be acquired in 160GB, 250GB, 320GB and 500GB storage capacities. Backed by a 5-year limited warranty, the 160GB, 250GB and 320GB hard drives are available now while the 500GB hard drive is slated to arrive in stores next month. The hard drives are offered in a price range of Rs. 2750 to Rs. 4400 depending on capacity.
