Google Rolls Out Generative AI Features In Docs, Gmail, Slides & More

google logo app If users won’t come to Google’s AI offerings, Google will bring AI to them—the company has introduced new generative AI features into a range Workspace apps, including Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and Chat.

The panic is almost palpable. Google needs to catch up to Microsoft whose big bet in OpenAI is paying off very well indeed. The best way to inject Google’s generative AI into our daily lives is via Workspace products, of course.

With this introduction, users can access new ways to draft, summarize, and brainstorm text with AI in Google Docs, produce AI images/videos/audio clips in Slides, or have AI write emails for them in Gmail.

The AI feature in Gmail even has a “I’m feeling lucky” option that will draft emails in a “playful voice” for anyone with a short memory and lack of attention to detail.

Google’s generative AI can also execute auto completion, formula generation, and contextual categorization tasks in Sheets. It can create new background and take notes in Meet. It can also “enable workflows for getting things done in Chat”.

“We’ll launch these new experiences this month via our trusted tester program, starting with English in the US. From there, we’ll iterate and refine the experiences before making them available more broadly to consumers, small businesses, enterprises, and educational institutions in more countries and languages,” Google said in a blog post.

Apart from this, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, spoke about PaLM API and MakerSuite for developers. It will allow devs to explore and build on Google’s large language models. Generative AI support in Vertex AI and a generative AI App Builder were unveiled as part of the new Cloud AI announcements.
