New Google Pixel 5 Flagship Ignores Top-Tier Snapdragon Chip

Google Pixel 5

The much-anticipated Google Pixel 5 has just been officially announced and in keeping with reports so far, it is not being accompanied by a bigger Pixel 5 XL variant. Google has even skipped the current top-tier Snapdragon 865 or 865 Plus chip in favor of a Snapdragon 765G processor instead.

The octa-core chip offers 5G Sub-6 or mmWave connectivity support (varies by coverage) owing to its integrated X52 modem. Another unconventional choice Google made with the Pixel 5 was to drop the telephoto lens. The main photography setup consists of a 12.2MP camera paired with a 16MP, 107-degree field of view, f/2.2 aperture lens instead.

The 12.2MP shooter has a 77-degree field of view, optical image stabilization and electronic image stabilization. Users will have to make do with the company’s Super Res Zoom software for their zooming needs. The front selfie camera which is punched into the display is an 8MP, f/2.0 aperture lens with an 83-degree field of view.

In terms of the other key specs, the Pixel 5 weighs 151g and features a 6-inch 2340 x 1080p OLED panel (with Gorilla Glass 6). This should make it a relatively comfortable phone to have in hand. The edge-to-edge display delivers content at a 90Hz refresh rate, in a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Users get 8GB of RAM, 128GB local storage, a 4080mAh battery and 18W USB-C fast charging.

Its rear is made out of fully recycled aluminum and comes in two color options of black and green. The phone has one slot for a nano SIM and additional support for an eSIM. It’s been loaded with the Android 11 OS of course, with up to 3 years of security and other updates guaranteed. The chassis is IP68-certified for dust- and water-resistance.

The Google Pixel 5 will not be beating the iPhone 12 to its rumored release date of October 16 in the US. It will be available in the US and Canada on October 29 instead. It will however be launched in Japan, Germany, France, Ireland, Australia, Taiwan and the UK on October 15.

Google’s decision to embed a Snapdragon 765G chip in the Pixel 5 means they can sell the flagship phone at a lower price than expected. This appears to be a well-considered judgment in a year in which the coronavirus pandemic is forcing people to carefully prioritize their purchases and put away money towards medical emergencies.

The smartphone is priced at $700 or €630 or £599, depending on where you live. For comparison, the top-end iPhone that will be released soon is reported to cost $1100 to $1200. The flagship Samsung Galaxy S20 series is marked between $999 to $1499.
