Those who are planning to buy a phone from Amazon India have to be extra sure of their choice from now onwards. The company has altered its return policy to stop people from sending back handsets under the ‘no longer need it’ option.
The change affects all mobile phones fulfilled by Amazon. It’s not all bad news though, since the company still offers a degree of protection for defective and damaged phones. Customers who receive such a unit are eligible for a free replacement as long as it’s returned within 10 days from the date of delivery.
This is a huge step for Amazon, taking into consideration the brand’s attempt to build up its reputation as a consumer-friendly store in India. No official reason has been given for the shift in policy. It’s possible users in the country were taking advantage of its refund scheme for smartphones.
An individual may easily use the handset and then give it back at no cost to themselves, leading to Amazon and the seller incurring a loss. The flip-side of this is that many smartphones are being sold exclusively via the website with no way for a person to actually get a feel of the phone before buying it.
Purchasers might not be happy with the model once they do receive it. While this wasn’t an issue before, it certainly is now. It’ll be interesting to see if the reworking of Amazon India’s policy will affect sales in any way. Rival site Flipkart still allows people to return handsets even if there is no damage, which could prove to be a point in its favor.
