Global environment issues are gaining importance with each passing day. Nokia too seems to be foraying in this territory. Hoping to make consumers aware of electronic wastes, Nokia India has launched a new campaign called ‘Take Back’.
The innovative campaign will allow users to deposit their handsets and mobile accessories irrespective of the brand with Nokia dealers and customer care centers. For every old handset or accessory deposited Nokia will plant a sapling and also hand out surprise gifts to the customer.
According to the company Nokia centers will now boast of recycle bins that will allow customers to dump in old mobiles and accessories. Nokia India thus hopes to create awareness about the need for greenery and protection of ecology by encouraging mobile phone users in India to understand the importance of recycling electronic waste.
“We want to educate mobile users on the importance of recycling e-waste. The ‘take back’ campaign will be rolled out across the country in phases,” commented Nokia India managing director D. Shivakumar. “If every Nokia user recycled just one unused phone, the discarded phone will live on in something new, as the material is used to make items like park benches, utensils etc.”
Considering the need of the hour the Finnish giant has stressed on recycling of electronic waste. Nokia also added that nearly 100% of the materials in a mobile phone can be recovered. These when recycled can be used to develop new products or generate energy.
The company had recently conducted a survey in 13 countries which revealed that just about 3% mobile users recycled their old phones. Others preferred selling out their handsets or passing them on to relatives and friends. It wasn’t surprising that India featured lowest in mobile recycling awareness rates with just 17% aware about it. Globally 50% people are unaware of electronic waste recycling.
Starting Jan 1, 2009 users can deposit their old mobile phones or accessories at Nokia Priority dealers and Nokia Care Centers.
