HTC Vive pre-orders commence on leap day

HTC Vive

February 29 has been marked down as the day on which the HTC Vive VR headset will be made available for pre-order. The device however, won’t begin shipping until April chugs along; so there’s still a lot of waiting to do for those interested in grabbing it.

What remains to be seen now is what kind of a price tag the HTC Vive will be getting. This is a particularly important aspect for the company to handle, especially since Oculus has already been getting a bad rep for pricing its Rift as high as $600.

Judging by its components and features, the Vive too is expected to be an expensive deal though. It takes a slightly different approach towards virtual reality, in the sense that it’s more room-oriented than the Rift which is all about the experience.

In order for this HTC VR headset to work properly, you need a large room at your disposal. That’s not all; a particularly beefed up PC is also one of its requirements. It’s only after you have these two that you’ll be able to fully explore its potential.

The Vive has been developed by the Taiwanese company in collaboration with game-maker Valve, also leading it to becoming a part of the SteamVR project. It comes fitted with two screens, each bearing an 1080 x 1200 resolution. This device moreover features over 70 sensors including a MEMS gyroscope, accelerometer and laser position sensors.

Like we said, the HTC Vive VR headset will be made available for pre-order on February 29, and that’s when we can expect to get an idea of what kind of a price tag it will be carrying.
