Barnes & Noble has already unveiled the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, while a wispy rumor is all we’ve heard of a Kindle with a front-lit eInk display so far. But this doesn’t mean B&N has put an LCD display on this one. Instead, the eReader features an adjustable light that can be turned on or off whenever needed.
The company isn’t elaborating much on the GlowLight technology incorporated by the device apart from intoning that it renders uniform illumination across the eInk screen. While the images may show the eReader’s display glowing evenly all across, the promotional videos depict another picture altogether. When reading in the dark or in low light conditions, users should be able to spot that the strip of light falling along the top is more intense than on the rest of the touchscreen.
“To date, readers have had to compromise: either buying black-and-white eInk reading devices to optimize their outdoor reading or color LCD devices to be able to read at night in bed with the light off. Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight is like two Readers in one,” averred William J. Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble. “With our new GlowLight technology and the most advanced eInk display available, we’ve created the most versatile, high-utility Reader ever; as exceptional for reading in the darkest bedroom as on the brightest beach. At only $139, Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight provides customers an amazing value and is the only device of its kind in the world.”
The Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight improves upon its predecessor by quite a huge bit in terms of its usability even in poorly lit conditions. Otherwise, the specifications hardly differ significantly. The gadget has a 6-inch 600 x 800p resolution touchscreen with 16-level grayscale, Wi-Fi, up to 32GB microSD storage and the integrated Best-Text technology to deliver an enhanced reading experience. With half an hour of daily time on GlowLight backing the claim, this eReader can apparently work for up to one month before needing to be juiced up again.
The Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight price is $139 and it can be pre-ordered online or through Barnes & Noble stores. The company says it’s looking at an early May release date for the device.
