The first Nokia Android phone is finally here

The wait for Nokia’s comeback to smartphones is finally over as current owner HMD Global has officially launched the Android-powered Nokia 6. The latter company was widely expected to debut its line of handsets at the MWC 2017 this February.

This may still happen, since the Nokia 6 has only been announced in China for now. There’s no word on whether it’ll make the trip overseas to other markets. The handset itself looks like a standard-issue Android phone with mid-range specs. No details have been disclosed about its software other than that it runs on Nougat.

HMD Global had previously asserted that it was working closely with Google to produce a near-stock version of Android. Design-wise, the Nokia offering has been crafted out of a solid block of 6000 series aluminum and 2.5D Gorilla Glass to project a premium and durable feel. It remains to be seen whether it can live up to the brand’s reputation for toughness even in the face of bullets.

The Nokia 6 has also been equipped with a polarizer layer on its screen which apparently enables superior sunlight readability and dual amplifiers to deliver 6dB louder audio. As for its photography skills, the device utilizes a 16MP rear camera equipped with phase detection autofocus, f/2.0 aperture, and dual-tone flash. An 8MP front-facing snapper takes care of selfies.

A quick look at the main specifications of the Nokia 6:

– Display: 5.5-inch, 1080 x 1920 pixels
– OS: Android 7.0 Nougat
– CPU: octa-core Snapdragon 430
– Camera: 16MP rear, 8MP front
– Storage: 64GB
– RAM: 4GB
– Battery: 3000mAh
– Connectivity: dual-SIM, Wi-Fi, 4G LTE, Bluetooth

The Nokia 6 is only available via Chinese retailer JD priced at CNY 1699 (roughly $245 or Rs 16700). It’ll be available starting from early 2017. HMD Global says it’ll be the first of many, so expect to hear more about the company’s phones in the months ahead.
