Facebook Hashtags

Rumors of Facebook planning to introduce hashtags have been around for a long time now and it’s finally time we can put them to rest. Facebook has started to roll out this new feature as the first step to enhance the way people converse on its network.

The main purpose behind launching this new capability is that no means have been provided to get a broader view of things going on and what is being talked about, like public events, people and topics. According to Facebook, hashtags will enable users to discover specific subjects and they will even have the ability to know what others have to say about it. Apart from this, they will be able to take part in conversations that have been publically shared and voice out their opinions as well.

Hashtags are already being widely used on Facebook. They may come from external sources when posts from Instagram or Twitter are shared on the SNS. The introduction of this capability basically means that they will be clickable. Clicking these words brings up a feed of information containing posts from pages and people taking about the topic in particular. Additionally, users will be able to look for specific keywords like #NBAFinals directly from the search bar.

Even hashtags that have originated from external sources will be clickable on Facebook and new posts can be composed from the feed as well as search pages. The trend was popularized on Twitter and has been adopted by various other social networks such as Google+, Tumblr, Flickr, Pinterest and the company’s own Instagram. As the name indicates, words can be made clickable by simply placing the ‘#‘ symbol before them.

As we’ve mentioned before, the new feature is now being rolled out and it should be available to everyone shortly. The company asserts that this capability is only the start and many more enhancements are in the pipeline, which are expected to surface in the weeks to come and over the months as well. They include the ability to see trending hashtags and deeper insights.

Here’s a quick overview of what users can do with the new attribute

– Find specific topics through the search bar
– Click on ‘#’ tagged words from internal and external sources
– Create new posts from the feed and search results page
