Netflix signs agreement with NBC Universal for prior season cable streaming

Netflix logoA foot in the mouth moment by Netflix’s CEO had quite offended consumers last week. On the brighter side though, Netflix got into an expanded license agreement with NBC Universal allowing members to view a range of broadcast series from the NBC television network and that too instantly. Even more exciting seems to be the inclusion of earlier content from popular NBC Universal cable channels.

With the multi-year deal kick-started, members will be able to view episodes from every season of ‘Saturday Night Live’. The fact that day-after broadcast of the upcoming 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons along with over a hundred episodes from the first 35 years of ‘SNL’ also feature shouldn’t hurt enthusiasts either. Coupled with earlier seasons of shows that have been refitted for streaming from Netflix as per the present deal, every episode from the previous season of series like ‘30 Rock’ ‘The Office’ and ‘Law & Order: SVU’ is also on board.

“We are very pleased to continue our successful relationship with Netflix,” shared Frances Manfredi, executive vice president and general sales manager of cable and non-theatrical sales for NBC Universal Domestic TV Distribution, who forged the deal. “We applaud Netflix for recognizing the value of content like ‘SNL,’ ‘Friday Night Lights,’ ‘Monk,’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’ to their subscribers.”

“This agreement adds meaningfully to the wide variety of content that can be streamed from Netflix and breaks new ground in our relationship with NBC Universal,” noted Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix.

Earlier seasons of shows like ‘Psych’, ‘In Plain Sight’ and ‘Monk’ are also slated to hit Netflix for the very first time. The previous seasons of ‘Friday Night Lights’ will be accompanied by next year’s final season of the show too. And it doesn’t stop at that. Over 75 earlier season episodes of ‘Battlestar Galactia’ with prior seasons of ‘Destination Truth’ and ‘Eureka’ will also make their streaming debut from Netflix.

With memberships at Netflix starting from $8.99 a month, this agreement only augments the wide choice of movies and TV episodes users are proffered.
