Apple has just revealed that iOS 6.1 is now available as an update and will bring added LTE options to several iPhone and iPad carriers around the globe. The company introduced the new platform (version 6) in September last year to mixed reception, with many ardent fans complaining of a restricted feeling especially with the new maps application.
With the updated iOS 6.1, 36 additional iPhone carriers and about 23 more iPad carriers around the world will be able to take advantage of the added LTE capabilities. The short of it is basically that support for LTE is now in more global markets. According to Apple, what this means is that an even greater number of their users can make FaceTime video calls and utilize the company’s iCloud services, in addition to enjoying very fast Safari browsing.
The platform which was introduced with the iPhone 5 brought along Siri and added support for more languages among other things. With the software version 6 there was also a new maps app with cartography designed by the Cupertino company which brought in turn-by-turn navigation and a ‘Flyover’ view. That the latter was criticized is another matter altogether.
That version of iOS also included a few socially oriented features such as the Facebook integration with contacts and the phone’s calendar, which meant users could post messages to the social networking web site directly from the notification center, Siri and Facebook-enabled apps. Over that, what the new version adds is a little more flexibility.
iOS users will now be able to use Siri in order to book movie tickets in the US through Fandango, a service in the country which charges a slight premium to purchase movie tickets online. In addition, the update gives iTunes Match customers the ability to download individual tracks from the cloud to their Apple devices.
Recently there were reports that the updated operating system’s code contained certain indications which pointed to the existence of a 128GB version of the 4th generation iPad. There was another rumor which hinted at a new iPhone with an improved camera. With a company as active as Apple is, such talk is somewhat expected, but the substance of the recent speculation is what stunned people.
Anyway, Apple’s iOS 6.1 is available in the form of a free software update. It is compatible with a wide range of iDevices including the iPhone 5, the iPhone 4, 4S and 3G, the 3rd and 4th gen iPad, the iPad mini and the iPad 2, as well as the 4th and 5th generation of the iPod Touch.
