Apple to unveil 9.7-inch iPad Pro, not Air 3 at March event

Rumors so far have hinted that Apple is getting ready to launch the 4-inch iPhone 5se and a new iPad model at an event on March 15. Up till now, the latter was expected to be the iPad Air 3. A recent report suggests otherwise, indicating the tablet will in fact be a 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

This strategy would mirror Apple’s MacBook Pro line which is currently being offered in 13-inch and 15-inch options. The brand is apparently equipping the 9.7-inch iPad Pro with nearly the same set of specs as its bigger 12.9-inch variant. This includes the older tablet’s RAM capacity, A9X processor, colors, 4 speakers, and internal storage options.

According to 9to5Mac, the new Apple device could additionally boast of the same display technology as the older variant, clearing the path for Apple Pencil support. Earlier rumors had implied that the gadget would ship with a Smart Connector. The site now claims the company is developing a smaller Smart Keyboard cover accessory for the tablet which will also be out by March.

Given its reduced screen size, the fresh iPad Pro might be priced closer to the iPad Air series rather than the iPad Pro. This would be an ideal strategy to follow and may even encourage people who were dissuaded by the latter’s price to buy the new model. Its unveiling may also lead to Apple streamlining its tablet lineup.

Sources assert that Apple is in the process of slowing down production of its older iPad Air and iPad mini units. As a result, the manufacturer may send the first iPad Air and iPad mini 2 to their graves the moment the 9.7-inch iPad Pro makes its debut.
