India seems to have grown into an important market for Apple, seeing as it has announced October 16 as the launch date of the new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, so soon after the series’ international debut. It did something similar with the iPhone 6 last year too, and has been introducing buyback, discount and EMI schemes for its other handsets in the country.
These strategies have worked well over the past year for Apple which was taking a beating from Samsung in the high-end segment before that. The launch of the iPhone 6S and its bigger cousin is well timed for the festival of Diwali. It’s not clear if there will be any issues with getting the iPhone 6S Plus onto shelves on time since supply problems were rumored recently.
Samsung has also hedged its bets ahead of the shopping season in India with the recent launch of the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Note 5, in addition to having the already excellent S6 Edge on shelves. We’d have a slightly better idea of how the Apple iPhone 6S series will fare here if we knew the cost.
Unfortunately, Apple has chosen to sit on that information for now, and will reveal the pricing details once we get closer to the release. Both handsets have already started shipping in the US, the UK, Australia, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, France, New Zealand, Singapore and Puerto Rico.
Apple fans reportedly snapped up more than 13 million units of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus within the first three days of them hitting the market. The smaller of the two is pegged at $649 in the US for 16GB. Last year, 10 million units of the company’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were sold within the same time period.
