iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X users can currently use third-party wireless chargers for refueling their handset, but Apple might be working on another way to charge the smartphones. We’re not talking about the AirPower mat here, but the AirPods charging case.
The Nikkei Asian Review claims that the next AirPods charging case will be able to supply power to iPhones. This would be extremely unusual if true. Apple has officially only talked about an AirPower mat (pictured above) which can handle an iPhone, an Apple Watch, and an AirPods case at the same time.
The present AirPods charging case has to be attached to a wire to fuel up. Apple is working on a new one which will be compatible with wireless chargers. It might come out by the end of the year, but this timeframe isn’t certain.
AirPods Wireless Charging Case Rumors
No one has said anything about Apple allowing both AirPods and iPhones to charge themselves using the former’s charging case till now. The accessory is obviously too small to fit an iPhone inside, so the handset would have to be placed on top or pressed against it.
This sounds very awkward and not something Apple would design. Plus, the current AirPods case only has a 398mAh battery inside. In comparison, the iPhone X has a 2716mAh battery. It probably wouldn’t be able to pass on much fuel as a result.

Maybe Apple sees it more as an emergency powerbank which could be useful for at least a small burst of energy. Some say it would make more sense for an iPhone to wirelessly charge an AirPods case. Others think this is a simple misunderstanding.
It’s possible the industry source behind this news is mixing up the AirPower with the AirPods case. We’ll let you know if there’s any new information supporting this rumor in the coming days.
