First 6.1-inch iPhone leaked image hints at OLED screen

There’s a new 6.1-inch iPhone leak in town, potentially giving us the first good look at the device. It’s expected to be 1 of 3 new iPhones this year.

6.1-inch iPhone Leak

The image above arrives courtesy a Twitter tipster named Mr White. He’s posted a photo of a display assembly from what is likely a factory in China. He says the image depicts the “iPhone X 6.1 OLED.” While the spy shot itself doesn’t reveal much, the caption is very interesting.

That’s because reports so far claim that the 6.1-inch iPhone will have an LCD screen. Noted KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had said as much and he’s usually pretty accurate. Apple is said to be doing this to keep costs low, in addition to some other measures.

These include stripping away 3D Touch support, stuffing less RAM inside, and utilizing an aluminum frame instead of a stainless steel one. All this is supposed to result in a budget iPhone which is priced somewhere between $550 and $650 for the single-SIM model and $700 to $800 for the dual-SIM one.

6.1-inch iPhone Leak Explanation

The latest 6.1-inch iPhone leak makes all this a bit more uncertain. It’s possible that Apple will use an OLED display for its entry-level iPhone after all. Perhaps it’s found another way to keep costs low. The company was reportedly in negotiations with Samsung to cut rates on the panels earlier this year.

Another explanation is that the photo actually depicts the 6.5-inch OLED iPhone X Plus. It’s difficult to make out whether the screen measures 6.1-inch or 6.5-inch from such a distance. The tipster has shared accurate leaks in the past, so there’s a chance the image is real but the description is wrong.

Other than the aforementioned iPhones, Apple is apparently working on a direct 5.8-inch OLED iPhone X sequel as well. Nobody knows what any of these smartphones are going to be called yet. The trio will probably run on 7nm Apple A12 chips, sport bezel-less screens with a notch, and support Face ID.
