As the year winds down, YouTube has gone ahead and introduced a new Trending tab for those of us who aren’t that vigilant about our viral viewing habits. The feature neatly puts together all the popular videos which are being watched in real time.
YouTube says the Trending page offers people the opportunity to watch videos as they take off. It will showcase music videos, viral clips and new trailers which are being shared, talked and watched by people on a daily basis. The offering can be accessed through a tab within the iOS, Android or desktop platform.
Google announced a similar tool last year with a separate section for viral YouTube videos within its Trends page. According to VentureBeat, the content being featured under the new tool will be independent of a person’s viewing history. However, it’s supposed to vary according to an individual’s country.
A YouTube spokesperson has clarified that the Google-owned company might limit clips by excluding explicit videos rated MA and above. The Trending list is decided based on an algorithm which takes views, comments, novelty and external references into account. It automatically refreshes itself as a person watches videos, pushing the content which has been viewed to the bottom of the rankings.

Furthermore, Android users get the additional benefit of categories within the tab namely News, Gaming and Music. This feature will probably be rolled out to other platforms in the future. As of now, YouTube is promoting its own 2015 Rewind clip at the top of the page. The rest is comprised of a mix of popular trailers, TV shows, full movies and ads.
