2018 MacBook Pro goes official with faster 8th-gen Intel chips

After several rumors and endless speculation, Apple has decided to surprise everyone by dropping a pair of new MacBook Pro models without any kind of fanfare. You won’t even have to wait around for the duo since the company’s already put them up for sale.

Apple has only refreshed the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. The 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar has been left untouched, which might disappoint folks who aren’t interested in having an interactive digital strip above the keyboard.

2018 MacBook Pro Changes

The design of the 2018 MacBook Pro is pretty much the same as it was back in 2016, leaving the biggest focus of the revamp to be faster performance. The 13-inch MacBook Pro boasts of an 8th-gen quad-core Intel Core i5/i7 processor for 2x faster speeds. The 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with an 8th-gen hexa-core Intel Core i7/i9 SoC for 70% faster speeds.

Apple customers have been clamoring for more RAM and storage in their laptops for a while and the brand is finally giving them what they want. They can fit up to 32GB of RAM and 4TB of SSD storage now. However, the new notebooks still only feature four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, so users will have to buy a dongle to deal with things like USB-A connectors or SD cards.

Another cause for concern is the MacBook Pro’s keyboard. Apple says its third-gen butterfly keyboard is quieter than before, but didn’t actually address the elephant in the room. To recall, the brand was forced to launch a repair program for the previous-gen keyboards because it would break down if even a smidge of dust fell on it.

Apple told CNET that it hasn’t made any engineering changes or tweaks to address the sticky key issue, so there’s a risk it could happen with the new series. For those still interested in buying the laptops, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar starts at $1799 and the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar starts at $2399.
