Critical bug discovered in Windows Media Player

eEye Digital Security logo eEYE Digital Security claims to have found a critical bug in Windows Media Player which needs to be repaired as soon as possible.

An unchecked buffer in WMP lets a person create bad bitmap BMP files which lets vicious folk implement commands on client PCs.

Windows logo The bug is present in Media Player versions 7.1 to 10 running on Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 SP4.

Eeye said that the massive installed base of the program concerned means that people and firms need to fix the problem right away.

As promised, Microsoft did release seven updates for its products on Tuesday under its Patch Tuesday initiative. These included fixes for two critical flaws in Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player, and five important updates addressing issues in Windows and Microsoft Office. A patch for this problem has also been released, we’d advise you to use it if you are a Windows Media Player user.
