128GB iPad 4 with Retina display reportedly in the works
That a 128GB iPad 4 with Retina display is being developed by Apple is the latest rumor doing the rounds. How the device will be priced is unclear at this point and should be based on the kind of audience it targets. And just as the BlackBerry event rounds the corner, news of RIM’s hardware and new platform seems to have abated for the moment.
The 128GB iPad 4 with Retina display isn’t the first product to receive more attention than Apple would have liked. We’ve seen a good amount of speculation creep up about the Cupertino-based company’s plans regarding a half-yearly launch cycle to fight off stiff competition from the likes of Samsung, HTC and a whole bunch of other OEMs starting to get into the high-end smartphone market. We’ve even gone from the conceivable to the believable to the bizarrely outrageous.
This time around, 9to5Mac reports that it has received word from its sources that Apple plans to release (in whatever capacity) a new tablet model with increased storage space. The Mac-dedicated site also points out that there exists code in version 6.1 of iOS – which is to be released soon – that hints at this possible outcome. Apparently, there have also been references to the increased storage capacity in the company’s recent iTunes 11.
So what we ‘know’ about the new device is that it should be a fourth generation product and keep the existing design. The rumor says the slab will come in the existing range of color options, which means it will be offered in both black and white. This part of the talk relating to external color doesn’t seem all that helpful since we can’t see Apple putting out any other spectral hues.
Then there’s the bit that says the new device will also be made available in both Wi-Fi + Cellular models as well as versions with just Wi-Fi as a connectivity parameter. And this goes without saying, but the new iPad should slot into the current lineup which includes 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. It will be positioned as an ‘Ultimate’ model and it will be offered as a slightly more premium SKU.
For now, the talk of a 128GB iPad 4 with Retina display should be relegated to the sidelines of reality, until something concrete can be substantiated. It must be noted though, that many past rumors relating to Apple products have come to fruition, such as the Lightning connector and a tinier entrant into the company’s tablet line.
