Panasonic builds Toughbook C1 convertible tablet PC

Here’s a new offering from a brand that is renowned for its Toughbook series of PCs – Panasonic Computer Solutions Company has slid the covers off the Toughbook C1 convertible tablet which houses a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-520M vPro processor that is attributed with Turbo Boost of up to 2.93GHz.

“One of the main markets for the Toughbook C1 is healthcare. We have been working with our healthcare customers to design a convertible tablet that truly addressed their needs. To date, the market has been making do with tablets that fail to offer the light weight, ergonomics and battery life needed by healthcare professionals. We believe the new Toughbook C1 addresses all these issues, while offering the additional benefits of excellent performance and durability,” cited Greg Davidson, healthcare senior business development manager, Panasonic Computer Solutions Company.

This gizmo lends support to multi-touch and digitizers that deliver owners finger or gesture input as well as stylus pen input options. Its triple hinge design implements one set of hinges for opening and closing the screen and another for rotating the screen to tablet mode. It also has an ergonomic strap and dome hand support system for user comfort that provides a natural keyboard tilt. Connectivity options are extended in the form of in-built Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and Qualcomm’s optional Gobi2000 mobile broadband technology apart from embeddable WiMax, Wi-Fi and 3G modules.

“The Toughbook C1 is an example of a convertible tablet PC that has been designed for a mobile workforce. Intel Core i5-520M vPro processor technology makes the Toughbook C1 more valuable by helping to address remote management and security issues. This creates a compelling solution for organizations that want the most out of their mobile employees,” affirmed Erik Reid, mobile client marketing director at Intel Corporation. The tablet tips the scale at just 3.2 pounds and is touted to offer users a battery life that stretches for around 10 hours of usage, the latter of which comes courtesy of its twin hot-swappable battery design. A shock-mounted, flex-connect HDD that is claimed survive drops of up to 30” has with a quick release feature and renders 250GB of storage capacity. An optional webcam or modem, a standard integrated dual array, SmartCard and fingerprint readers are included among the other mentioned specifications of the device.

Panasonic’s Toughbook C1 will see a world-wide launch in June 2010. It will be tagged at $2,499 in the U.S. and come backed by a three-year warranty.
