Quanta Computer gets order for One million OLPC laptop
Taiwan’s Quanta Computer announced that it has received orders for one million notebook PCs for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project.
Quanta Computer expects to ship between five and ten million OLPC notebooks this year as new countries sign up for the project.
One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project was initiated to make sure that the children from developing nations learn how to use computers in an effort to bridge the digital divide between rich and poor.
OLPC laptop has a 7.5-inch 1200 x 900 pixel LCD screen, a keyboard that switches between languages, a digital video camera, built-in 802.11b/g wireless connectivity, a hand crank to charge its built-in rechargeable battery, and a modified version of Fedora Core Linux adapted for remote regions.
The OLPC laptops run on Linux and are based on a low-power, x86-compatible AMD Geode “embedded” processor.
At the moment OLPC laptops cost around $130 but with mass production the price per laptop can come down to as little as $100 in a couple of years.
