New Wolfson audio chip to extend iPod battery life
Scottish technology firm Wolfson Microelectronics, which develops the audio chips found in Apple iPods, will soon unveil a new low-power chip, the WM8985.
Wolfson Microelectronics says the chip will be 70% more efficient than those found in current iPod. This means if your current iPod gives you for 14 hours music, with the new Wolfson chip and a similar battery the same iPod would be able to play for 23.8 hours of music.
During the launch of a similar product for digital televisions last month, Julian Hayes, vice-president of marketing at Wolfson Microelectronics, said: “As the demand for high-quality audio in digital entertainment applications, including portable video, continues to grow, designers need greater flexibility, reduced complexity and reduced cost in the components they use.”
The price for the new WM8985 chip has not been revealed yet.
