Chile map and Google Earth logo The Chilean government has expressed its angst against search giant Google, and has asked the company to fix its Earth geographical search program. The hugely popular Google Earth software apparently places a village called Bernardo O’Higgins in Argentina.

Villa O’Higgins, a town of around 400 residents near the glacier-encrusted tip of South America, was named after Bernardo O’Higgins, a famous and revered commander of military forces that won Chile’s independence from Spain.

Chile’s Foreign Ministry said that it had contacted Google. The Mountain View, Calif.-based search engine company replied on Saturday, saying that it was working on the request.

Google spokeswoman Megan Quinn said, “We have received the request and are working with our partners to get more preside data for the region.”

“We’re constantly working to improve the quality and accuracy of our maps. This is an ongoing process as we receive new information from third party data providers,” she added.

Till Saturday, Google earth still showed Villa O’Higgins in Argentina.
