eyeVio, a Video Sharing Web site to be launched by Sony in Japan
On Thursday, Sony Corp announced that it will soon launch a video-sharing Web site in Japan. This marks the electronics and entertainment firm’s first step into this arean, challenging Google’s popular YouTube video sharing network service.
The new video sharing service called eyeVio will be launched in Japan initially on Friday. Sony hopes to introduce this service in other countries as well in the near future. But, before that, the company wants to gauge at home before drawing up an overseas launch schedule.
According to Sony CEO, Howard Stringer, “This is part of Sony’s quiet software revolution. It’s an opportunity to transmit user-generated video anywhere you want to, anytime to anybody, in a protected environment.”
Sony also mentioned that it would closely monitor content on its soon-to-be launched video sharing service. In the recent past, Google-owned YouTube has drawn criticism to the fact that it tolerates user piracy. Youtube has also attracted unwanted criticism for a number of copyright violations.
Sony spokesman Takeshi Honma said that such a model would appeal to companies who are looking to release content and at the same time to protect their image.
“We believe there’s a need for a clean and safe place where companies can place their advertisements,” Honma added.
On Sony’s eyeVio video sharing network, users will able to select who can view their content, and for how long as well.
What’s more, the Sony eyeVio video sharing service will not be limited only to Sony devices. This will enable users of Apple’s iPod to download content to their digital media players. Users of other digital media players will also be able to download content from this network.
