Apple Shuts Down Rumor Site Think Secret in Legal Settlement
It’s no secret now that ThinkSecret.com, a well-known site that published company secrets of Apple, is on its way to see close doors.
Way back in January 2005, Apple had filed a lawsuit against ThinkSecret.com, which has now been settled between the two. Apple dragged ThinkSecret to court after the latter published details of a stripped-down Macintosh computer dubbed Mac mini two weeks prior to the official product launch announcement.
The whiz kid Nicholas M. Ciarelli, who is ThinkSecret’s publisher, stated that he plans to move on after the settlement. Ciarelli, who is now a senior at Harvard University, rolled out the site when he was just 13 years of age. His alias was Nick dePlume.
An Apple spokes echoed a similar cohesive sentiment, “We are pleased to have reached this amicable settlement and happy to have this behind us.”
It’s a known fact that Apple is very secretive about its moves. While suing ThinkSecret, the Cupertino, California-based company stated that bloggers should not enjoy the same rights to protect sources granted to the normal journalists. Though a California court initially was in favor of the Mac, iPod and iPhone maker, after appeal Apple lost the case.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) backed Think Secret in its legal spat against Apple, to stop the company from forcing it to disclose its sources.
