Social networking site, MySpace.com has announced that it will be playing host to a political community called Impact Channel on its Web site. This community has been designed to make it easier for politicians, non-profits and civic organizations to connect with MySpace users around the globe. In fact, the launch of the Impact Channel kicks off a series of large scale online and offline political programming that will continue through the 2008 presidential elections.

The Impact Channel political community will include a voter registration tool, links to all official candidate profiles, content from GOOD Magazine, Impact-related events and job listings, videos and programs.

Besides, in the coming weeks, an Impact-specific profile type will be introduced, and will offer ‘Impact-makers’ special functionality such as the network’s first viral fund raining tools and customizable badges.

According to Chris DeWolf, CEO of MySpace, “As the country’s most trafficked Web site, MySpace will play a powerful role in the upcoming election. Our digital candidate banners will be the yard signs of the 21st Century and out political viral videos and vlogs are the campaign ads of the future.”

So, besides having Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton on you MySpace friends list, what else is in store for MySpace users all around the world? Firstly, the Impact Channel creates a great platform to connect political candidates and civic organizations to MySpace.com’s dynamic user population.

Secondly, the new Impact Channel will enable the MySpace community to learn about the candidates, experience the political process online and offline, and uncover issues and organizations relevant to their lives.

Chris DeWolfe added, “By empowering our users with easy-to-find information, offered in a way they can relate to it, impact will ignite their involvement in the political process.”

As part of the launch of Impact Channel, 10 presidential candidates, five Republicans and five Democrats launched their official MySpace profiles. Known names who are contesting for the 2008 Presidential election include Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain.
