Amazon.com joins Film Industry, Buys Rights to Fantasy Book ‘The Stolen Child’
Amazon.com is all geared to venture into the forte of film production, with an adaptation of American novelist Keith Donohue’s fantasy, “The Stolen Child.” Though the American electronic commerce company is on a look out got a filmmaker and a studio partner, it is not in search for a co-financer for the adaptation, Daily Variety reported. Infact, Amazon.com is offering to use its website to promote the film in both its theatrical and DVD releases.
Amazon merchandising director Laura Porco said, “We are always trying to innovate, based on listening to customers and the things they’re passionate about. This was a book we passed around to our editorial and merchandising teams. Everybody was excited by Keith’s voice and felt this could be a great movie.”
The sale of the screen rights to the novel was arranged by the United Talent Agency, which had previously worked with Amazon on “Amazon Fishbowl with Bill Maher” and orchestrated Donahue’s original book deal with Regal Literacy.
“Having a billion-dollar company with such marketing might behind you is appealing,” said Regal. “If they cross-promote the DVD with the book, these are compelling things.”
“With our brand and our retail experience and customers around the world, we believe we can be an extremely valuable partner in the development, marketing and distribution of this film,” Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said.
Positive reviews of “The Stolen Child” from customers, as well as the national media, fueled the decision to option the book’s screen rights, Herdener continued, adding that it was too early to speculate on how Amazon would market any film eventually made.
The Stolen Child is a truly remarkable work on the ancient legend of the changeling. Keith Donohue’s moving take on the myth, rooting it in our time, and telling it from the alternating viewpoints of the two changelings, makes for one of the most touching and absorbing novels of all times.
