Japan against Microsoft, Google and Yahoo Big Japanese firms are planning to jointly develop technology for an enhanced search engine to compete with the present giants Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft.

Around 30 major companies, such as Hitachi, Ltd. and Fujitsu Ltd., and the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone group announced their plans to build a research institute, with support from the government, to develop and have a new search engine in practical use within two years, the Mainichi Shimbun reported on Wednesday. The organizations participating in the project are aiming to develop technology which will allow Internet users to search for information on TV screens and show information in response to verbal requests.

Three major U.S. Internet companies — Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft — rule the search engine market. Many people in Japan fear that the domination of the three firms will prevent Japanese companies from entering the market.

The Japanese companies plan to jointly develop Internet search technology and launch it so that any company can transform the technology to develop their own search engines to meet individual needs, the newspaper read.
