Microsoft, on Monday, launched a new community dubbed 10 in its move to further develop on the accomplishment of its Channel 9 developer site. Every single day, 10.net will host a video displaying new technologies and the people who have worked towards it. However unlike Channel 9, 10.net will go beyond covering Microsoft.

Channel 10 logo The first video on 10.net features an exploration of KEXP 90.3, an independent radio station that streams live over the Internet. While watching these videos, users of 10 can comment on the videos. In order to reach the broadest visitor base the site supports multiple formats including QuickTime.

10 developer Jeff Sandquist said, “In building 10 we paid close attention to the finer details like being able to participate in the conversations while watching a video or little things like pausing the player when you want to sign in to the site. It is a very asynchronous experience.”

With 10, Microsoft is taking an informal advance to target a more-youthful Internet generation. While Channel 9 videos were largely about geeks and for geeks, 10 bring to the table an edgier approach with screen-savvy hosts from G4 TV. The site’s design reflects that approach.

Jupiter Research senior analyst Joe Wilcox claims that while 10 has “a clear marketing slant,” it does not goodwill Microsoft’s products. “The videos are available to download in iPod, PSP and Windows Media formats. The Website is clear and uncluttered. Jeff and his team have done a commendable job,” Wilcox says.

At the end of each week, the videos will be compiled into a full-length feature with further add-ons. A crucial role in 10 will be played by the blogs which have been created by Microsoft employees as well as by community members.

Sandquist said, “Our dream is to create a place for those people who want to use technology to change the world.”
