Firefox Version 2.0 to incorporate Anti-Phishing Technology
According to press reports released on Thursday, Google’s anti-phishing technology will be making it to the Mozilla code for the well-known Firefox browser. Google has also confirmed that some kind of anti-phishing technology would be incorporated with Firefox 2.0.
The second version of the alternative browser is slated for Q3 of 2006, around the same time as Internet Explorer 7’s likely release. Microsoft has also added its own anti-phishing technology to IE 7, endorsing it as one of the most noteworthy add-ons to the market leading browser.
The web is a platform where most phishing attacks, which involve the theft of usernames; passwords and confidential information take place. Therefore as per experts, building technology into Web browsers is the right thing to do.
Mozilla has not yet revealed or committed on how it would include Google’s technology, or whether it would be making use of the Google’s implementation at all.
Currently, Mountain View, Calif.-based search engine provides the Safe Browsing plug-in for Firefox, which its Google Labs division released in December 2005. The decision to possibly include Google technology into the browser has a lot to do with the two companies’ close bond; especially with several former Firefox developers now working for the search giant.
While an alpha release of Firefox 2 likely be released later this month, the anti-phishing technology would not be included at first. However, Mozilla said it could appear in later builds on an experimental basis.
