Yahoo has gone the green way and is supporting environmental protection with the launch of a web site called Yahoo Autos Green Center. Yahoo Autos Green Center is a web site that is entirely devoted to alternative fuel vehicles.

Yahoo Autos Green Center promises to provide users with comprehensive, unbiased data about petroleum-shunning cars and trucks. Information on communities that have mushroomed in the recent past too is included on this Web site.

Yahoo Autos has also teamed up with ‘Environment Defense’, which is a non-profit organization set up to give vehicles “green ratings.” The green ratings rank from one to hundred based on the proportion of greenhouse gas emissions, polluting exhaust, and fuel economy.

The Yahoo Autos Green Center has acquired information from the Internet and has combined it with content that is distributed by users of the search engine and its online properties like Yahoo Answers.

Green Center also offers information about purchase incentive programs and stations for alternative fuels like bio-diesel made from vegetable oil.

“Our Green Center is at the confluence of two large, growing trends — green going mainstream, and the explosion of social media on the Web,” said Yahoo Autos general manager Jennifer Dulski.

There is also an online forum, which enables potential buyers to question green car owners.

In an effort to demonstrate the viability of alternative-fuel vehicles, Yahoo and a California custom car group were going to try to set a grease-powered vehicle land speed record on November 12. A six-cylinder twin-turbo car operating on bio-diesel will be piloted at top speed on El Mirage Dry Lake bed in Southern California in a bid for the record, Yahoo said.
Yahoo has converted its employee shuttle buses to bio-diesel.
