Gmail Virus Scanning Faces Criticism

Just a day or two back we had reported about Google adding an anti-virus scanner, to its 20-month old Gmail web mail service and now we learn that apparently users have already started complaining.

For some reason the consumers don’t seem to be too happy with the new improved Gmail.

The 3 main complaints being sighted in Gmail discussion groups are: the virus-scanning feature can’t be turned off; Gmail’s long-standing virus protection, namely blocking all executable file attachments, remains as it is; and Google is not saying much in terms of which vendor is providing the anti-virus technology.

Google has countered saying that while the company gives thoughtful consideration to user feedback, it has no plans of making the anti-virus feature optional as of now, nor does it plan to stop blocking executables. The company remained in-communicado, regarding the supplier of the anti-virus technology.
