Intel’s forthcoming notebook Montevina platform is in the works of being re-branded as Centrino 2, reported Digitimes. Apparently, the reason behind the same is to avoid creating confusion for the customers.
“Centrino” is the name rendered to the past four generations of Intel’s notebook platforms, which includes Carmel, Sonoma, Napa and Santa Rosa. Even though there have been leaps and bounds of enhancements brought about to the CPUs and chipsets which have gone faster, better and feature rich; the fixed brand name have made it difficult for consumers to identify the differences, thereby lowering the credit in the market.
Notebook developers have given a positive nod to Intel’s decision, especially since they feel that most users are not well-versed with the specifics of each platform and codename. The new marketing strategy should give consumers the feeling of a substantial upgrade and will expectantly encourage replacement demand.
The Computex Taipei 2008 event will witness the announcement of Intel’s Centrino 2 platform. In addition, the leading chip maker will also be introducing six 45nm notebook CPUs, all with a 1066MHz FSB, having core speeds ranging between 2.26-3.06GHz. They will be priced between US$209-851 in 1000-unit tray quantities.
Following which in Q3 of 2008, Intel will roll out seven 45nm SFF (small form factor) notebook CPUs, pretty much on the lines of those employed in Apple’s MacBook Air and soon other ultra-portable notebooks.
