Samsung 64GB SSD

In March, we had reported that Samsung had developed the industry’s first 1.8-inch 64GB Flash Solid State Drive. Now, the company has officially announced that it has begun the mass production of these SSDs, which it claims to be of the highest density that is available today for mobile computing applications.

According to Jim Elliot, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, “We see sharply increasing interest in SSDs among OEMs worldwide amid a growing push to launch premium SSD-based notebooks, particularly in the ultra-mobile category.”

And, why wouldn’t the company see such a growing trend for Solid State Drives! After all, SSDs offer great reliability, faster boot times and application start-up times when compared to hard disk drives. Besides, SSDs can also improve battery life by 20% when used in notebooks.

The Samsung-developed 64GB SSD consists of 64 eight GB single-level cell flash memory chips. And, since these SSDs use 51nm process technology, it permits the fabrication of much smaller components, with each chip having circuitry 1/2500th the width of human hair!

The announcement of Samsung’s mass production of 64GB Solid State Drives makes the company the largest producer of high-capacity SSDs in the world.
