Samsung Logo Yesterday, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., known worldwide as the leader in advanced memory technology and producer of high-end graphics memory announced that it is using a much more advanced production method to push graphics memory chips to a higher speed. In fact, the 66% speed boost for its high end graphics memory is expected to debut sometime later this year itself.

The new Samsung GDDR4 memory, which happens to be the fourth series of graphics cards with double data rate memory. For those who are yet clueless, graphics memory is the mechanism that processes video images in desktop PCs, notebooks and workstations to generate huge volumes of video simultaneously. Samsung’s GDDR4 uses JDEC-approved standards for signal noise reduction to help attain the fastest possible speeds.

Samsung is using 80-nanometer technology to produce the 4 GB/s (2.0GHz) graphics memory, which is touted to be 66 per cent or two-third faster than the fastest commercially available memory available to date. The new Samsung 4GB/s graphics memory will be available in a 512MB density and will have a 32-bit data bus configuration.

According to Mueez Deen, marketing director, graphics memory, Samsung Semiconductor Inc., “Our new GDDR4 memory will add even more zip in video applications, making gaming, computer-aided design and video editing a lot faster than ever before. This will enable ultra-smooth movements in animation, making games incredibly realistic, resulting in a truly immersive experience.”

As of now, Manufacturers of graphics processing units (GPU) have already expressed their interest in the new, as yet unavailable memory from Samsung. However, the Samsung GDDR4 graphics memory will be soon available for customer sampling later this month. Analysts also expect Samsung’s GDDR4to significantly boost demand in the high-performance memory market segment over the next 12 to 18 months.
