Dell Announces PowerVault MD1000 Direct-Attached Storage Enclosure

Dell PowerVault MD1000 Dell has introduced the PowerVault MD1000, a direct-attached storage enclosure based on industry standards and some of the newest technology to offer customers noteworthy gains in bandwidth, capacity, performance and value.

Along with the PowerVault MD1000, Dell is offering a storage enclosure which includes a 3.5-inch SAS drives. This technology allows users to easily run mainstream and bandwidth-intensive applications.

According to Dell, users could get four times better bandwidth with 3.5-inch SAS drives versus traditional SCSI drives. Moreover, compared with 2.5-inch SAS drives based on the typical data profile, the 3.5-inch SAS drives offer a 30% increase in data throughput and double the storage capacity.

The PowerVault MD1000 storage enclosure is based on the proposed Storage Bridge Bay (SBB) specification. The SBB specification targets at standardising external disk subsystem technologies, in order to offer customers faster access to emerging technologies such as SAS, increased product quality and access to a broader range of products at an affordable price.

“Cost-effectively managing relentless data growth is one of the primary concerns for customers of all sizes,” said Darren Thomas, general manager, enterprise storage and services, Dell Product Group. “This announcement focuses on customers who need to improve server utilization with direct-attached storage. Dell makes this easy by offering customers a common user management experience with PowerVault disk products and industry-standard PowerEdge servers.”

PowerVault MD1000 Key Features:- Capacity: 4.5 Terabytes with the option to expand up to three shelves for a maximum of 13.5 Terabytes
- Drive types and sizes: 36 GB, 73 GB and 146 GB drives operating at 15,000 RPM; 73 GB, 146 GB and 300 GB drives operating at 10,000 RPM

Complementary Enterprise Products:
- Dell PowerEdge server commonality: expands disk storage on PowerEdge 1850, 2850, 6800 and 6850 servers
- Dell PowerEdge 6800 and 6850 servers now support 800 MHz dual-independent front side buses on the latest dual-core Intel Xeon 7041 and 7030 processors
- Dell PowerVault tape autoloaders and libraries: PowerVault 124T, 132T 136T and the PowerVault ML6000
- Storage software: EMC NetWorker, OpenManage Server Administrator, Microsoft SQLServer 2005, Microsoft Exchange, Symantec Backup Exec, CommVault Galaxy and Galaxy Express
- Optional Dell services: installation, training, management and enterprise support services
