Department of Veterans Affairs logo On Monday, the Department of Veterans Affairs agreed that there was indeed a employee who took the data home on CD without any formal permission which resulted in the pinching of the social security numbers of 26.5 million veterans. The information was taken when the employee’s house was robbed. Apparently the employee was not authorized to take the files home to work on a data collation project.

The data contained the details of all American veterans who were discharged since 1975 including names, dates of birth and ofcourse the Social Security numbers. VA Secretary Jim Nicholson said the stolen data did not include medical records or financial details; however it may have disability numerical rankings. The employee has been placed on leave pending a review, Nicholson continued.

There is very minimum possibility that the intention of the theft was the pinching of the social security data, the VA has setup a cell center and website for veterans who believe their information was misused.
