Gears of War coming to theatre screens in 2009

Here is some good news for all you ‘Gears of War’ fans. New Line, a studio has just won feature rights to the hugely popular Microsoft and Epic Games Xbox 360 exclusive video game. It has been decided that Stuart Beattie, script writer of “Collateral” fame, will be penning the adaptation of the video game. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey will be producing the movie.

“Gears of War” sold over 3 million units and has thus been credited as the most popular game on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service. On Xbox Live, players from all over the world can compete against each other online. It is no wonder then, that “Gears of War” won the game of the year award at the Game Developers Choice Awards and the Interactive Achievement Awards.

Epic, the developers of Gears of War developed an extensive back story in hope of utilizing it for a film as well as potential novels one day. It sure looks like this has now become a reality for the creators of ‘Story’, a world that has been attacked by Locust, and one in which Marcus Fennix fights to reclaim the planet Sera for its surviving humans.

According to Epic VP and co-founder Mark Rein, “We wanted to make an entertainment property that’s not just for games but for other media.”

Once Stuart Beattie completes the script of the Gears of War movie, Bowen and Godfrey will start looking out for a director who will do justice to the adaptation of an already mass phenomenon in the video game world. They are aiming to release the Gears of War movie in the summer of 2009.
