Google and Adscape logos So the rumors were true. Google has finally acquired Adscape, a firm that puts dynamic ads in video games. Adscape basically lets advertisers put brand messages that are related to the game in someway and thereby makes a win-win situation for the advertiser as well as the game publisher.

Some time back, a Google spokesperson was heard saying, “We are always taking into consideration innovative ways to extend Google’s advertising program to profit our users, advertisers and publishers. In-game advertising offers one such probable extension among many others.”

Google paid a whooping $23 million (approx Rs. 100 crores) for Adscape. Google’s archrival Microsoft has already put a foothold in the in-game advertising. Last year, it bought Massive Inc, which had major companies as it clients. Microsoft has even put ads in the video game Anarchy.

In-game advertising is not a bad idea, but the ads should be well placed. You surely cannot have Marcus Fenix telling to buy a bike or Mario jumping around dressed in the advertisers’ colours.
