That Nintendo Wii is the cheapest next-gen console is as general knowledge a thing as the sun rising from the east. However, a further price drop certainly wouldn’t harm those who are planning to buy the console. But Nintendo of America senior vice president of marketing George Harrison has told Reuters in no uncertain terms that the company will not be decreasing the price of the Wii any further.

George Harrison told the news agency: “We will stay at $249 for the foreseeable future. We are still selling everything we can make. We think we’re in a great position. Both our competitors took price reductions and it hasn’t stalled our momentum at all. Most importantly, we’re going after an expanded audience that they are not in a position to capitalize on. The goal is to try to have reasonably steady production over the course of the year. Suppliers don’t want to shut down and do nothing in the early part of year.”

Currently available for $249, the Wii’s biggest USP has been its motion-sensitive controller, apart form its low price of course. An undisputed winner in the console war, we just wonder what the rivals would be doing if the Wii’s price was reduced even further. Certainly Harrison’s stance on cutting the prices further, should give Microsoft and Sony a slight reason to smile if not jump with joy!
